• What you need to know about cyber security and protecting your business’ data.

Each year new mischievous ways are developing where hackers are trying to trick you into their games. Breaching your secure data and putting a real test on your business’ cyber security. In this blog, we’re looking at protecting your business from cyber security attacks.

A recent stud found that 99% of these cyber crimes have been found to require human interaction and due to the heavy reliance on computers for business operations.

Businesses are leaving themselves vulnerable to cyber attacks by not considering the basic safety risks. Most people believe that the sophisticated cyber attacks are the biggest threats to any organisation. However, the biggest cybersecurity threat to a business is infact people that work there. It is the responsibility of companies to educate their employees on cyber security and best practices to minimise the risk.

Cue the activity of the day – Phishing.

We’d love to say, gone are the days of good old telephone scams. The call from an ‘unknown number’, the long pause between conversations to that gut wrenching feeling you get talking to these low-life masterminds. But unfortunately they’re still lingering around.

But, with the general population’s awareness of not answering a phone calls unless they’re confident of the number – hackers are now finding new ways to breach your and your employees personal details and private networks to then chip cracks in your online security. What was once a gods-send, emails are now the key channel hackers are honing in on to get the information they’re so desperately seeking.

Phishing is where the hacker will cast the bait often in the form of an email. Disguised as legitimate business but with one thing missing, the authority of the ‘brand’ they’re acting on behalf of. Placing a sneaky link or bot within the message for one to click, fill out the simplest form of information and boom. Hook line and sinker – they’ve got you.

The scary part is how authentic these emails and fake web-pages do look. What can you do to stop these? Nothing really. But there are preventative measures you can take to try and protect your business and your employees if they’re found in this situation.

  • Education is key. Constantly remind and upkeep cyber security knowledge throughout the workplace so all employees understand their role in protecting the businesses’ network.
  • Double check the email address, most authentic emails that come from legitimate businesses will be formatted similar to this

Whereas phishing emails may not look like that.

  • Install an anti-phishing toolbar whereby if you accidentally stumble across a malicious site the toolbar will alert you about it before fully accessing it.
  • Invest in a managed firewall, we at Comvergence can help you there. Managed firewalls help protect sensitive data for if there is a breach in your system. Our Unified Threat Management consolidates multiple security and networking functions all on one appliance.
  • Trust your gut, if something doesn’t feel legit, you’re probably right. Most companies will contact you via phone if they really need to be in touch.

At Comvergence, we are not only aware of how impactful a breach as such can be to a business, but have products to provide you with strong firewalls to keep unwanted pests out.
